Getting Started with Classes

Everything you do as a teacher on KnowItAll Ninja starts from Classes. This guide explains what you see when you first sign in, how classes and memberships fit together, and how to move around the class screens.

If you have just been given access, start here.

Signing in and finding your classes

Sign in as usual and you land on the Classes page. To get back to it at any time, Classes is the first item in the sidebar on the left.

Three things are worth noticing:

  • The blue bar at the top shows which membership you are looking at.
  • The pencil icon beside it lets you rename that membership.
  • Your classes appear as cards underneath.

Memberships and classes

These two words mean different things, and the difference matters.

  • A membership is your school's subscription. It determines which courses are available and how many student places you have.
  • A class sits inside a membership. It is a group of students you teach, with its own register, tasks and progress data.

Most schools have one membership containing several classes, one per teaching group. If your school has more than one membership (for example a separate subscription for a different qualification), use the dropdown in the blue bar to switch between them.

Note: the courses you can assign to a class come from the membership it belongs to. If a course you expect is not available, it is usually because it is not part of that subscription.

Reading a class card

Each class appears as a card. The small figures along the bottom tell you a lot at a glance.

What you see What it means
Class name Click View to open it
People icon How many students are in the class
Book icon How many courses are assigned to it
Clock icon When someone in the class was last active

The last active date is the quickest way to spot a class that has gone quiet.

To reorder your classes, drag the handle on the left of a card. The order you choose is saved and is yours alone. It does not change what your colleagues see.

Inside a class

Click View on any class card to open it. Every class has the same set of tabs.

Tab What it is for
Students Your register. Add, edit and remove students
Teachers Colleagues who can see and manage this class
Courses Choose which courses this class studies
Tasks Set homework and revision with deadlines
Tracker Detailed marks and time data for every student
Insights What to re-teach, and who needs your attention
Settings Class name, join code and deletion

The Students tab opens first. It lists everyone in the class with their email address and when they were last active.

Moving between classes

You do not need to go back to the Classes page every time you want a different group. Use the class dropdown in the blue bar. It switches class while keeping you on the same tab.

So if you are looking at the Tracker for one class and switch to another, you land on that class's Tracker rather than back at its register. Choose All Classes at the top of the list to return to the Classes page.

The dropdown only lists classes you have access to, within the same membership.

What next?

  • Adding students to a class, by CSV, join code or QR code
  • Assigning courses, choosing what a class studies
  • Setting tasks, homework with deadlines

Screens in this guide use a demonstration class. Your own class names, students and data will differ.
